I had the enviable pleasure recently to be invited to join the inaugural sailing aboard the RSSC Splendor. 3 fabulous nights sailing from Ancona, Italy, via Dubrovnik in Croatia and around the coast to Civitavecchia, Italy. Some amazing scenery and a perfect calm sailing in temperatures far above the norm for February in the Med.
The ship itself is exquisite: the detail to ultra-luxury has been fine-tuned to perfection.
The Regent staff, from the female Captain Serena Melani to the plethora of multi-national cabin crew throughout the ship, are all extremely proud of their 'new baby'! And rightly so – she is simply beautiful! Nothing is too much trouble: you want an extra fluffy pillow? It’s yours. You want to eat 5 main dishes for dinner? Then feel free! You want to bathe in champagne? A little extravagant perhaps but you get the picture.
My D Grade Concierge Suite on Level 10 was perfect. 332sq ft of luxurious suite plus another 132sq ft of balcony. A bottle of Champagne welcomed my arrival and the in-suite mini bar and coffee machine was replenished daily. The large custom-crafted bed was possibly one of the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in – I didn’t want to get up! I certainly didn’t do the huge walk-in wardrobe justice as my packing for a 3-day break was somewhat limited but rest assured ladies, there is more than enough wardrobe space for all your finery and much, much more. My bathroom hosted both a bath and a walk-in shower which I took full advantage of, including the vast array of L'Occitane luxury toiletries, which again were replenished as required. The afternoon was spent exploring the ship and photographing every possible angle. There really is too much to see in only a few days!
The dining was exceptional. My only complaint…the size of my expanded waistline! I dined each evening in a different venue, enabling me to taste the fayre in 3 out of the 4 main restaurants. The first evening I joined a table of 4 in the Pacific Rim on Deck 5, which has an Asian themed menu. An amazing blend of cultures and flavours of the far east and the best Black Cod I have ever tasted! A trip to the Constellation Theatre followed for a fabulous show which wouldn’t have been out of place on the West End! Concluding the evening with a couple of cocktails in the Observation Lounge on Deck 10 with their resident pianist.
We sailed into Dubrovnik. After a very rushed breakfast (having struggled to get out of that oh-so-comfortable bed) I spent the day ashore on one of the free excursions. (Don’t forget the majority of tour excursions are included within your Regent initial cost). We were accompanied by a very knowledgeable local guide who took the time to speak to us all individually and answer any questions we had. Some free time to explore the town and a coach trip into the stunning mountains before returning to the ship in time for a light lunch at the Pool Grill. Afternoon tea in the Meridian lounge followed with some of the best cakes and pastries... there goes that waistline again!
Dinner that evening was hosted by members of the Regent Management team. I was very lucky and honoured to be invited to join the UK Managing Director, Graham Sadler in the Prime 7 Restaurant on Deck 10. Dining on lobster and Cajun encrusted Salmon – I was in fish heaven! I’m not a meat eater but my dinner colleagues assured me the steaks were also to die for. We struggled with the sweet menu as all 9 dishes looked so good…however a solution was quickly found! Being a table of 8 we simply ordered one of each dish so we could each have a taste of them all! A quick visit to the Theatre to catch the end of the hilarious comedy show before ending my evening back in the Meridian Lounge for yet more cocktails and a ‘cabaret’ evening specially put together by some of the very talented Regent marketing staff who were accompanying us on this voyage. Thank you ladies – you were brilliant!
The day was spent at sea, following the coast around the 'boot' of Italy on our way to Civitavecchia. I had planned to have Room Service breakfast in my Suite, however when it came to it, I was still far too full from the previous evening's amazing dinner, I only managed coffee and orange juice! Despite the best efforts of the in-suite dining staff trying to tempt me otherwise. This later proved to be an excellent plan as the Sunday lunch buffet served in the Compass Rose (Deck 4) was a vision to behold! Ice sculptures filled with lobster, prawns and various shellfish. Every meat a carnivore could possibly desire. Fabulously decorated sweets and a chocolate fountain with my all-time favourite: macaroons (I really was in heaven!)
During the afternoon I took the opportunity to view some of the other suites, from the standard veranda suites (believe me, at 307sq ft, including an 88sq ft balcony, there is nothing ‘standard’ about these suites!) up to the amazing Regent Suite on Deck 14 which, at 3,026sq ft, plus a 1,417sq ft balcony, is the epitome of ultra-luxury. I think I may stay here on my next visit! Another afternoon tea in the Meridian for yet more cakes followed a visit to the Culinary Arts Kitchen. Here guests can join top chefs to learn how to prepare a variety of dishes to amaze their friends and family back home.
A quick visit to the SERENE wellness spa and fitness centre to work off a couple of those extra cakes and cocktails I plan to have later, before returning to my suite to get ready for dinner.
My final nights’ dinner took me back to the Compass Rose for more fine dining of crab and avocado, tender chicken roasted with tarragon and whiskey, with a selection of cheeses and port to finish. All accompanied by a constant flow of wine, impeccably chosen for you by your sommelier. Once more to the Observation Lounge for a couple more cocktails to complete the perfect end to a perfect few days.
